Project Aims
By examining women’s experiences of the most intensive period of change in obstetric practice on record, the research will reveal new insights into the gendered experience and politics of healthcare in the Republic.
The following research questions guide the parameters of the TÚS project:
- What were the experiences of pregnancy and giving birth for women in the Republic of Ireland from 1950-2020, and how did these experiences differ according to social class, ethnicity/nationality, urban/rural location, sexuality, religion, ability, and marital status?
- How did experiences of pregnancy and childbirth shift across this period, and what factors influenced these changes?
- How did medical professionals and medical advancements affect the changing experiences of pregnancy and childbirth in this period? 4. To what extent did the Catholic Church influence women’s experience of pregnancy, birth and maternity care?
